How Do You Get to Kirishima and Get Around from Kagoshima?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach the Kirishima area, the mountain region at the north end of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park in southern Kyushu, and plan how to move around. It uses the English pages of the National Parks of Japan site, which is produced by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) with contents provided by the Ministry of the Environment. All pages were read on 2026-10-04.

The pages give approximate times but no timetables or fares, so check those before you travel.

The short answer

The park site gives the journey from Tokyo as 2 to 4 hours and from Kagoshima Station as 30 minutes to 2 hours. It says that public transportation suffices for visiting some popular areas, but that a car gives better access to sites and trails off the beaten path.

From Tokyo by air

The park site says frequent flights operate between Haneda Airport in Tokyo and Kagoshima Airport, a journey of 120 minutes. It recommends renting a car near the airport for more options. For the Kirishima area by public transportation, it says to take a Kagoshima Kotsu bus to a stop in the hot-spring town of Kirishima Onsen. That takes 35 minutes, and the page says the town "makes an excellent base for exploring".

From Kagoshima Station

The park site says to take a JR limited express train from Kagoshima Station to Kirishima-Jingu Station. From there you can travel by infrequent buses to a destination such as Kirishima Onsen, using a Kagoshima Kotsu bus. Because buses are infrequent, the page says renting a car is the better option, especially for serious hiking, since missing the last bus can cause multiple problems.

Renting a car

The site says there are few rental outlets within the park, so it advises renting near Kagoshima Station to make the most of your visit. We found no information on one-way rentals, drop-off fees or winter road rules on these pages.

Three places to stop for information

The park site says to visit the information centers before exploring. The Kirishima City Tourist Information Center stands next to the giant red torii gate of Kirishima-jingu Shrine. It is open 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from April to September and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from October to March, and outside there is a free footbath.

The Kirishima Onsen Tourist Information Center is on the second floor of the Kirishima Onsen Market building and is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Its English-speaking staff can help you choose from the nine hot springs. The Takachihogawara Visitor Center is also open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and offers English pamphlets only. Entry to all three is free.

Safety information on the day

The Takachihogawara Visitor Center page says staff can give up-to-date information on trail conditions and volcanic warning alerts. The Ebino Eco-museum Center page says the same for volcanic alert levels. Ask at one of these centers before you hike, because Kirishima has more than 20 volcanoes.

Language help at the centers

The two town information centers list their English as conversational level. Pamphlets are available in English, Korean and Chinese. The Takachihogawara Visitor Center offers English pamphlets only. The Kirishima City and Kirishima Onsen centers both say Wi-Fi is available.

What the staff can point you to

At the city information center, staff can tell you about the Kirishima Shinsui Gorge, Mitarashi Falls and local hot springs. They can also advise on the best places to enjoy seasonal attractions and local events such as fire festivals and processions. Ask them which of these suit your dates and whether the roads to them are open.

Getting around inside the park

The park site says several companies offer bus service within the park, but infrequent service makes renting a car the better option. For visitors who do not hike, it adds that several bus tours combine trips to Sakurajima and the Kirishima area.
